HG is actively seeking talented engineers for either our New York or San Jose office to work on patent-related matters as Technical Advisors. Haley Guiliano’s Technical Advisors work in an apprenticeship-style role with senior attorneys to provide our clients with world-class IP services while they build a solid foundation for a career in intellectual property law.

Haley Guiliano’s Technical Advisors work in an apprenticeship-style role with senior attorneys to provide our clients with world-class IP services while they build a solid foundation for a career in intellectual property law. Technical Advisors use their backgrounds and problem-solving skills to understand our clients’ cutting-edge innovations and efficiently handle our clients’ worldwide patent and legal matters. No previous legal training or experience is required.

 Applicants should have the ability to primarily work in-person at one of our offices.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

• Confer with inventors about their inventions and how best to protect their innovation.
• Prepare and prosecute patent applications.
• Assist clients to assert their IP rights against infringers
• Defend clients from improper assertion of third parties’ rights.
• Defend client patents against third party challenges.
• Perform competitive landscape analyses.

Job Qualifications

• Advanced degree in electrical engineering, computer engineering, or applied physics, or equivalent industry experience.
• Background in telecommunications, semiconductors, circuit design (analog or digital) is a plus.
• Candidate must be eligible to become a registered patent agent before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.
• Excellent academic record.
• Exceptional communications skills (written and oral).
• Excellent analytical skills and a problem-solving mindset.
• Must have a healthy curiosity and an interest in developing a career in intellectual property.

Benefits

Competitive compensation and benefits package. Starting base salary for technical advisors is $115,000 per year (and end of year bonus eligibility).

Technical advisors can become eligible to attend an approved part-time evening law school program, funded by the firm.

• You are a senior working toward a B.S. in an Engineering discipline (EE, ME, CE, Physics, etc.) and will graduate in 2026.

• An excellent academic record.
• Must be a self-starter with a healthy curiosity and an interest in developing a career in intellectual property.

Daily tasks include:

• Confer with inventors about their inventions and how best to protect their innovation.
• Prepare patent applications.
• Counsel clients on strategies for how to protect their inventions.
• Defend clients’ patents against third party challenges.
• Help clients when third parties have misappropriated clients’ intellectual property.
• Understand clients’ business and technological landscapes.
• Learn intellectual property law.
